The children were excited about becoming International Discovery Agents who get to solve clues and figure out the mystery on their mission to Switzerland. We assembled and studied the Discovery Agent Briefing pack. We read the instruction card and mission plan.
We solved some puzzles to warm up our brains.
We got fingerprinted and signed our ID cards.
We chose code names and pinned on our Discovery Agent badges,
We embarked on a mission to solve the mystery of the cuckoo clock.
We decorated our travel boxes and stored our travel documents and Discovery Agent clues safely inside.
We began our adventure in the tiny town of McGregor, South Africa and heard about the CASE OF ADVENTURE and some of the wonderful things it contains.
We read about the Gray family and an amazing secret they find inside a Cuckoo Clock which takes them on a journey to Switzerland. We decided to join them, so we packed our bags!
We completed the DISCOVERY AGENT mission at the end of chapter 1.
We searched on the internet to find out where cuckoo clocks were first made.
We looked at photos of Swiss and German cuckoo clocks and read about about Loetscher (Lötscher), the only genuine Swiss chalet cuckoo clock maker in existence today. We watched a few videos about cuckoo clocks on the Destination Switzerland videos page and studied how they are made.
We discussed whether Pendulum cuckoo clocks would work well in space?
We marked Cape Town, South Africa on our world map with a map marker.
We solved the first Discovery Agent clue card using the cipher wheel and discovered the secret message! The cipher was SL, so we matched S on the inner wheel with L on the outer one, and then looked up each letter to solve clue.

We marked Switzerland on the Europe map and the World map with a map marker.
Our older students filled in the countries around Switzerland on the blank Europe map, and the younger students labelled the continents.
We looked at some photos of Switzerland and at our relief map of the country. We felt the mountains and valleys with our fingertips!
We worked on our Destination Switzerland Lapbook.
We completed the ‘coin in the cuckoo clock minibook’ and the ‘Switzerland flag and country card’.
We learnt about some of the cities and villages in Switzerland including the capital.
This was the first of twelve exciting sessions learning about Switzerland! We carefully packed away our badges and ID cards in our boxes ready for the next part of our mission.
