Are you ready for your adventure in Scotland? We’re gonna have a great time. This country is filled with mystery, the misty moors, the ancient castles, and of course the Loch Ness monster. We’ll have fun learning about Scottish clan chiefs, Jacobite symbols, swords stashed away in secret places, and most exciting of all, you’ll join in the hunt for the missing honors of Scotland.

Your kids will learn about the flag of Scotland and color in their own version of the flag. There’s a project page where they can paste their minibooks, including ones on the pipers’ uniform, Sir Walter Scott, and Greyfriars Bobby.  Use this book as a springboard for your students to delve into a study of Scotland – of its unique history, its cuisine, its animals and its countryside.

There’s a fun map showing cities and other details of Scotland. Your kidz will get to learn Scottish slang and Gaelic phrases. There are clue cards with secret codes to solve about Scotland. You’ll see some beautiful pages showing landmarks like the Walter Scott Monument and the Tall Ship in Glasgow, among many others. Your kids will even learn about the national anthem, ‘Scotland the Brave’. There’s a treasure map to draw, and they’ll learn about the Honors of Scotland–the Crown, the Sword, and the Scepter. In the novel, the Gray children have to find the missing Dirk.

Your kids can learn about Scottish Tartans, and about John Knox. They’ll read many Scottish fun facts, like “The Jacobite Train is best known for its starring role in the Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts Express. The train will take you on a journey on the West Highland Railway, where you’ll have spectacular views of the countryside.”

They’ll learn about Scottish cuisine such as cock-a-leeky soup, deep fried pizza, haggis, neeps and tatties. They’ll learn, too, about the castles of Scotland, and the animals found in Scotland. There’s a journal page for your kids to fill in about what they’ve experienced, and a page of items to cut out and paste, like map markers, passport stamps to put in their passport (which you get free in the Discovery Agent Fun Pack).

There are recipes to cook for your end of unit Celebration Meal, where you make Scottish food and have a fancy meal with your family. Your kids will show all the things they’ve learned about Scotland. There are lovely food flags that you can make and use for decorating your Scottish meal! 

At the back of the book, you’ll find the instructions, which tell you how to break down the activities into different days and how to do them each day. It’s 14 days long, so you can do it consecutively, or you can do it once a week or twice a week. It’s completely up to you. This is the longest of our unit studies.

Details about A Clash of Swords in Scotland Novel

An old-fashioned villain in an ancient castle… brought down by a boy! Rome closed his eyes.
